TABINAJ (Anti-tobacco Alliance of Women)

Tamak Birodhi Nari Jote (TABINAJ) is the first anti-tobacco alliance of women in Bangladesh which has taken up anti-tobacco campaign to save women, men and children from the hazards of tobacco. It is against smoking and use of smokeless tobacco products which are mostly consumed by women. The Alliance is against tobacco cultivation and use of women and child labour in the hazrduous biri industry. Tabinaj is actively lobbying for Law Amendment of the Tobacco Control Law for its effective implementation. Tabinaj member organisation are working in over 43 districts of Bangladesh.

UBINIG Final Report  Executive Summary a. This study: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) use in Bangladesh is high, yet it is generally held that SLT manufacturing often occurs outside the tax net. This study examines SLT production, pricing and turnover for a sample of 88 SLT manufacturers operating outside the tax net and identifies factors perceived to contribute to non-payment of taxes by SLT manufacturers. b. Tabinaj || Saturday 22 August 2015 Tabinaj is a network of Women’s organizations and individuals and has become part of Tobacco Control Group in Bangladesh bringing in new dimension in women’s role as advocates agaginst tobacco consumption. Tabinaj is the first and only women’s alliance around the country active in 52 out of 68 districts of Bangladesh against tobacco use and cultivation. Shima Das Shimu || Tuesday 07 April 2015 “Award offered to British American Tobacco Company (BATC) as an women friendly company is an act of dishonor to women and violation of law, this award should be withdrawn” protest of Tamak Birodhi Nari Jot (TABINAJ). A human chain was organized by TABINAJ in front of Shoparjito Shadhinata (TSC), University of Dhaka at 3:30 pm on 31 March, 2015, against the award offered to British American Tobacco Company as “ Women Friendly Company” by Brand Forum. TABINAJ expressed deep indignation and protest against the award and demanded immediate withdrawal of the award.
